My life. Checking in with kureba, the mountain gorilla. I was born in 1998 to a family of mountain gorillas in the virunga volcano region of Rwanda, in Africa. Since birth, I've been observed by scientists from the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International, because as gorillas, we are 'critically endangered'. In fact, there are only about 380 of us left in my region. As a kid, I liked to play and wrestle with my friends, but now that I'm getting bigger, I'm acting more responsible and looking out for my little brother, Dushishoze. Pretty soon I'll be a "Silverback", the leaders of gorilla groups and the power center of gorilla life. Wahoo! I'm pretty lucky to live in a really big group of mountain gorillas-over 60! There's lots of gorillas my age, and a bunch of younger ones, too. There's even six silverbacks in the group to help keep everyone safe. We need help! Dushishoze has me to stick up for him, and I have the silverbacks to look out for me, but who's going to help them? Like I said, mountain gorillas are an endangered species, and our habitats in Africa are disappearing more every day. My family and I are lucky because we're being protected by the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International which sends anti-poaching patrols into the woods to protect us. You can help, too!
