Potatoes and ground beef sauce. Committed to quality since 1967. A family favorite recipe! The Story of Captain Ken's: In the summer of 1943, Ken Freiberg began his career as a firefighter in St. Paul, Minnesota. In 1953, he was promoted to Captain of Firehouse Number 14. In those days, it was traditional for each fireman to cook meals for their fellow firefighters. Captain Ken's specialty was oven-baked beans with bacon. Word spread and neighbors would stop by the fire station hoping to sample Captain Ken's mouthwatering recipe of oven-baked beans. In the mid-1960's, Captain Ken used his two-week vacation to sell oven-baked beans from a food stand at the Minnesota State Fair. The beans were a hit. In 1967, Ken retired from the fire department and started Captain Ken's Foods. Captain Ken initially rented a former bakery building to make his firehouse oven-baked beans. The recipe was made from scratch, which included soaking dry navy beans overnight, then slowly oven-baking each batch. Ken would load his station wagon with the delicious baked beans and drive to area grocery stores making sales calls. The company is still proudly based in St. Paul, MN. Today, over 55 years later, Captain Ken's features a broad selection of comfort food products sold to supermarkets and restaurants. The company is family-owned and operated, and is dedicated to following the same commitment to quality started by founder, Ken Freiberg. And the beans are still oven-baked! Products are made using premium ingredients and are pre-cooked, then flash frozen - not canned - to lock in freshness and nutritional excellence. Try our products and we know you'll be back!
