In the late 1800's, the puffin was given the scientific name of fratercula arctica, which means "little brother of the north" in Latin. 'Little brother' may be interpreted as 'little friar'; puffins' black and white plumage resembles a friar's robes. How many puffins are there? In 1901, there was only a single pair of puffins in the US. Today there are 1,000 pairs of puffins nesting on the islands of Maine and 3-4 million pairs of puffins worldwide!
