The Cornfield: From 1945 to 1954, my older, Bob, and I would spend a two-month summer vacation on Grandpa's farm in Tennessee. It was a lot of fun for us even though there was always hard work to do. We would feed the chickens, pigs, mules and bring our daily supply of water from the spring that rand own the side of mountain. I tried milking the cows but I never got the hang of it. Grandma and Grandpa lived in a log home built in the mid 1800's. They dis not have electricity, gas, running water, inside plumbing, a tractor or a car. A coal oil lantern or candle provided our lighting. The stove was the source of hot water, which got its heat from the wood that Grandpa piled high beside the house. The plumbing was located in the shack our back. Transportation was a hay wagon pulled by two mules (Betty and George). Grandpa planted 30 acres with his beloved mules each year. The job I hated most was working in the fields. Grandpa would wake us up at 5:00 am and we would go to the back porch to wash up. The cool water sure would wake you up in a hurry. Grandma's breakfast consisted of fried eggs, fried chicken or pork chops, biscuits, homemade gravy, churned butter and jelly. By 6:30 am we were in the hay wagon headed for the cornfields. Grandpa, my brother and I went to the cornfield one day. Grandpa give me a hoe and said, cut down those corn stalks up one row and down the other. At first I thought this was fun but twenty minutes into the job, my hands were full of blisters and I changed my mind. Later, my hands started to bleed, so I wrapped them in some corn shucks and continued working. My hands hurt a lot, but just when I thought I was going to cry, my Grandpa drove up in the hay wagon. He asked me what the problem was so I showed him my bloody blisters and home we went. The next morning Grandpa gave me a pair of gloves and back to the cornfield we went. About five minutes after Grandpa dropped me off, a big black snake crawled out in front of me and nearly scared me to death. I dropped the hoe and ran to the house as fast as I could. when I got there, Grandma gave me glass of water and told me to sit and wait for Grandpa and my brother. When they came in for lunch and heard my story, Grandpa laughed and said I wouldn't make a very good farmer. During his 87 years in this world, Grandpa never traveled more than 50 miles from his farm. He never owned a car, a suit, or anything else we take so much for granted these days. Grandpa's deep faith in the Lord made him a happy man had a special peace within him. I love and miss this wonderful man. Endurance: The inward strength to withstand stress and to do my best.
