Moved by the power of music. Music Speaks: Music is the foundation of all the performing arts. Music transports us - it can be absorbed quietly. Evoking strong memories, or move us in powerful ways. It makes us dance, laugh, cry, sing, create. It's the cornerstone of so much that we love. Even people with memory loss can enjoy and connect with music. It has a way of directly speaking to the soul. As I was contemplating sculpting a piece that is an expression of music, I wanted to etch a pattern that tells a story. The interlocking carvings of dancers and musical instruments flow in a continuous narrative around the figure. Her gesture is one of being enraptured. She could be the listener, or she could be the performer. Sharing her gift with others. Music Speaks (darker skin). Artist Susan Lordi hand carves the original of each Willow Tree figure from her art studio in Kansas City, Missouri. This piece is cast from Susan's original carving, and then painted by hand. Expression is revealed through gestures only - a tilt of the head, placement of the hands, a turn of the body. The simplicity of form and the absence of facial features signify Willow Tree.
