What started out as an all-too-routine raid of the Stonewall Inn gay bar turned into a multi-night uprising on the sheets of Greenwich Village. It wasn't the first time LGBTQ people challenged oppression and organized, but the Stonewall uprising ignited a mass movement that quickly spread across the US and around the globe. In 2016, President Barack Obama dedicated the Stonewall National Monument in recognition of Stonewall's pivotal role In LGBTQ history. 2019 marks Or 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising, now an international symbol of the fight against oppression and for freedom for all people everywhere.
