The Garza Siete: Twas the night before Christmas, & all through the house the smell of cinnamon & sugar lingered about. The bunuelos were made in the kitchen with care, so the whole family could gather round and share. The Siete Story: For three generations, the seven (siete) members of our family have honored the tradition of making bunuelos each Christmas and New Year's Eve. As a child our mother, Aida, watched as her Grandma ChaCha rolled out the dough, stretched it over her knee, plopped it in the fryer, and topped it with cinnamon and sugar. Her secret bunuelos recipe was melt-in-your-mouth crispy and delicious! The bunuelos tradition continued with Aida and her own mother, Grandma Campos, and then again with us when we were children. We bake piles of bunuelos for the whole family to share, breaking off a piece as we pass them around, while listening to our favorite holiday music and drinking coffee and hot chocolate. In recent years, we began a new tradition of making grain free bunuelos using cassava, avocado oil, agave, and pumpkin.
