San Marzano tomatoes: These prized Italian tomatoes are known for their slender, oblong shape, vibrant red hue and beautiful balance of fresh, sweet and tart flavors. San Marzanos own a delicate, thick flesh that contains fewer seeds and less water, making them ideal for simple tomato sauces, where their tremendous flavor can really shine. Brought back from the new world in the late 18th century, seeds were planted in the fertile volcanic soil of nearby MT. Vesuvius, and there, family farms continue the tradition of harvesting this crop each year in the small areas exclusively selected for growing San Marzano tomatoes.
