Decide how much you want. Each serving equals about 1/2 cup. Number of servings - 2. Water (cup) - 2/3. Margarine (Tbsp.) (or butter or olive oil) - 1. Salt (tsp.) (optional) - 1/4. Milk (cups) - 1/3. Potato flakes (cups) 2/3. Number of servings - 4. Water (cup) - 1 1/4. Margarine (Tbsp.) (or butter or olive oil) - 2. Salt (tsp.) (optional) - 1.2. Milk (cups) - 2/3. Potato flakes (cups) - 1 1/3. Number of servings - 6. Water (cup) - 1 3/4. Margarine (Tbsp.) (or butter or olive oil) - 3. Salt (tsp.) (optional) - 3/4. Milk (cups) - 1. Potato flakes (cups) - 2. Number of servings - 12. Water (cup) - 3 1/2. Margarine (Tbsp.) (or butter or olive oil) - 6. Salt (tsp.) (optional) - 1 1/4. Milk (cups) - 2. Potato flakes (cups) -4. Number of servings - About 20 (entire box). Water (cup) - 5 1/3. Margarine (tbsp.) (or butter or olive oil) - 10. Salt (tsp.) (optional) - 2 1/2. Milk (cups) - 3 3/4. Potato flakes (cups) - Entire box. Stove-top directions: Heat up water, margarine and salt to boiling in saucepan. Remove from heat. Stir in milk and potato flakes until potatoes are desired consistency. Note: Prepare entire box recipe in a 4 to 6-quart Dutch oven and stir with a whisk. (Remember to refrigerate any leftovers) Microwave directions: Combine water, margarine, salt, milk and potato flakes in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave covered on high using the chart below. Remove and stir with fork until potatoes are desired consistency. # of servings - 2. Microwave times - 2 to 2 1/2 (mins). # of servings - 4. Microwave times - 3 to 3 1/2 (mins). # of servings - 6. Microwave times - 4 1/2 to 5 (mins). Note: Microwaving is not recommended for amounts over 6 servings. Make it your own! Extra creamy potatoes: Stir in additional milk, one tablespoon at a time, until desired consistency. Extra firm potatoes: Stir in a few more potato flakes. Extra rich potatoes: Substitute evaporated milk for milk. Prepare as directed, adding additional evaporated milk, if necessary, to reach desired consistency. Extra flavorful potatoes: Substitute chicken broth for water and omit salt. Garlic mashed potatoes: Substitute garlic salt for salt. Or, add a spoonful of garlic from a jar of diced garlic. Or, add one clove diced fresh garlic. Reduced-fat directions: Use skim milk and reduce margarine amounts by half. The potatoes made with the reduced-fat directions contain 50% less fat than the regular directions. Reduced-fat directions: 3g fat per serving. Regular directions: 6g fat per serving. Store in a cool, dry place.
