(Lemur catta). Madagascar is home to thousands of species found nowhere else on earth. The ring-tailed lemur is probably the best known Madagascan primate. They sunbathe to warm themselves, sitting upright with hands on knees, resembling a meditative "lotus" posture. For warmth, ring-tailed lemurs bask in the sun during the day; at night they sleep piled up with one another in a warm bundle called a "lemur ball". Threats: Habitat degradation. Water & air pollution. Climate change/natural events. Human interference/poaching. Chemical & pesticide use. Invasive species/diseases. Habitat loss and hunting are the greatest threats facing the ring-tailed lemur. Much of its forest habitat is being deforested for charcoal production or burned to make way for livestock pastures. Poaching is another serious threat facing this species. Statistics. +/- 17: The average size of a lemur group, known as a troop, is seventeen. 90%: 250.000 plant and animal species can be found in Madagascar: 90% are found nowhere else on the planet. 13: There are 13 thick black and white bands on a lemur's long tail. Population trend: decreasing. Sustainable palm oil: Grown in the tropics, palm oil is one of the most widely used edible oil crops. It is also one of the most destructive. Conventional palm oil farming is decimating the habitat of species like the endangered orangutan. Let's support a better way in 2004. RSPO established international standards for sustainable palm oil production, helping farmers replace destructive techniques with sustainable farming practices. To aim higher we work with IBD ecosocial and agropalma to adhere to higher standards and complete traceability of non-GMO verification, fair trade practices, and zero deforestation. Insist on certified sustainable palm oil in the products you purchase, like the one used to create the dairy-free creme based filling of this chocolate bar.
